Walks by cause

A glow walk for schools and ptas

The glow walk as the autumn fundraiser children ask for again.

Why dusk suits this cause

Children will walk a surprising distance if they are covered in glow sticks and it is past their usual bedtime. A school field or playground loop needs no road closure, parents come too, and the autumn term has early sunsets that suit a 6 pm start.

Who organises it, and who walks

Run by the PTA or a year group. Walkers are pupils with a parent or carer, plus staff.

How far

Count laps, not kilometres: a 400 m loop walked for 45 minutes suits ages 4 to 11.

The moment

Lights out on the field for one lap, lit only by what the children are wearing.

Fundraising ideas

  • Sponsorship per lap, with a lap card stamped at a glow station.
  • Class against class for the most laps, with the trophy held for a year.
  • A glow craft table before the start: decorate a jar lantern to carry.

What to watch for

  • Every child walks with a named adult. Say so on the form.
  • Close the loop: one way in, one way out, marshals on every gate.
  • Collect used glow sticks at the finish so none end up on the field.

Schools and PTAs: common questions

What is a good glow walk distance for primary school children?

Use a short loop and a fixed time, such as 45 minutes. Younger children do a few laps, older ones do many, and nobody is left behind.

How does sponsorship per lap work?

Sponsors pledge an amount per lap. Each child carries a card that is stamped once per lap, and the stamped card goes home as proof.
